How Hawaii child support law works

The Judiciary’s 2024 Child Support Guidelines govern the worksheet. Hawaii combines primary support needs with a standard-of-living adjustment, called SOLA. A simple percentage of salary or a generic income-shares table misses this second stage.

How the guideline is calculated

  1. Start with each parent’s monthly gross income and use the guideline income tables and any necessary self-employment forms to derive net and SOLA income.
  2. Build primary support need from the per-child allowance, eligible child care, and children’s health insurance or cash medical support.
  3. Allocate primary needs between the parents, calculate SOLA from the remaining guideline income, and apply the worksheet’s expense credits.
  4. Use Appendix A-2 for equal or extensive time sharing; split custody requires its own comparison. Record exceptional circumstances on Appendix A-3.

An extensive-time-sharing adjustment applies when a parent has more than 143 but fewer than 183 overnights. Do not treat every overnight percentage as the same calculation.

Documents that make the worksheet more useful

  • Pay statements and self-employment records for both parents.
  • An overnight calendar for each child, plus child-care bills and the child’s portion of health coverage.
  • The Judiciary’s electronic workbook or Appendices A-1 through A-5 for the relevant scenario.

Keep the source document beside each figure you enter. If a number is uncertain, note what still needs to be confirmed before relying on an estimate.

What this site’s worksheet covers

The educational guide and official resources are available now. Our Hawaii workflow collects both parents’ financial information and produces a printable accounting. It does not calculate a child-support amount; the official state calculator linked on this page does.

How Hawaii cases actually get to a number

Start with guideline income for both parents, determine the basic obligation, then apply time-sharing and the self-support allowance. Hawaii’s worksheets are more than a combined-income cell.

Hawaii’s child-support guidelines use income shares under the Family Court’s current guideline materials, including a self-support allowance and exceptional-circumstances worksheets. That is a different path from neighboring states that use another model, so do not import a table, percentage, or overnight credit from somewhere else.

Parenting time in Hawaii

Time-sharing percentages are entered on the guideline worksheet. Extensive sharing can move the family onto additional worksheets. A verbal ‘we split time’ description is not enough.

Costs Hawaii usually treats separately

  • Child-care costs
  • Medical support and insurance
  • Private-school or extraordinary expenses if exceptional circumstances apply
  • Transportation between islands when the court includes it

When Hawaii courts leave the guideline

Exceptional circumstances are the Hawaii path off the ordinary guideline. They must be proven. High travel costs between islands appear more often here than in mainland income-shares states.

Official Hawaii forms to keep beside this guide

Hawaii income worksheets, SOLA, time sharing, and applicable exceptional-circumstance forms. This site provides financial intake and a printable accounting; the support amount comes from the official calculator. The primary authority is the published Hawaii source. Fill the official form from source documents. Use this page only to check that you chose the right Hawaii path—primary versus shared, table versus percentage, add-ons versus basic support.

Where this is typically filed

Family Court of the First through Fifth Circuits hears cases; Child Support Enforcement Agency handles IV-D. Use the current Hawaii Child Support Guidelines, not a prior booklet.

Questions specific to Hawaii

Does Hawaii use gross or net income?

Use guideline income as the current materials define it. Paystub net is incomplete.

Is there a self-support allowance?

Yes. It is part of the Hawaii guideline structure and can change the remaining income available for support.

Are inter-island travel costs automatic?

No. They may be exceptional-circumstance or add-on facts. They are not a silent table adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I calculate Hawaii support now?

The Judiciary publishes an Excel workbook that performs its calculations, alongside printable forms and instructions. Choose the workbook and forms from the official guidelines page.

Does this guide also calculate alimony?

No. These steps concern child support. A worksheet may consider an existing spousal-support payment when its rules allow, but it does not determine a new alimony award.

Can I file the financial intake as the state worksheet?

Our intake is a preparation aid. Use the official state forms and the instructions for your court when submitting a proposed support calculation.
