How Indiana child support law works
Legal starting point. Indiana’s Child Support Rules and Guidelines use weekly adjusted income and a published support schedule. The framework estimates a weekly total for the children before assigning the paying parent’s proportionate share. Read Indiana Child Support Guidelines 3A–3C.
How the guideline is calculated
The worksheet combines weekly adjusted income, rounds to the applicable schedule entry, and allocates the total according to income. Parenting-time credit, health insurance, child care, extraordinary expenses, benefits, post-secondary support, and deviations require additional guideline worksheets.
What this site’s worksheet covers
Uses the Indiana Judicial Branch Guideline Schedules for Weekly Support Payments under the Indiana Child Support Rules and Guidelines updated effective May 14, 2024. Guideline 3D states that combined weekly adjusted income amounts falling between schedule amounts should be rounded to the nearest amount. Guideline 3F allocates the total child support obligation between parents in proportion to their weekly adjusted income; the noncustodial/paying parent pays that proportionate share. Work-related child care, health insurance premiums, extraordinary health care, extraordinary education expenses, parenting-time credit, Social Security credits, post-secondary worksheets and deviations require the full Indiana worksheet.
Documents that make the worksheet more useful
Child Support Obligation Worksheet with weekly adjusted incomes and parenting-time credit. Gather the records that support the income, parenting-time, insurance, child-care, and other adjustment entries that apply to the family. The calculator applies the guideline formula described above and identifies any listed worksheet line it does not compute.
For a filing or agreement, complete the official court forms linked on this page. They use the same guideline structure explained here, and the court applies it to the facts of the case.

Why does Indiana need an overnight credit worksheet?
Indiana first calculates a weekly child-support obligation and then evaluates the parenting-time credit under its own worksheet. The credit reflects the guideline's treatment of expenses between homes; it is not obtained by multiplying support by an overnight percentage. Health insurance and child care have their own entries.
Prepare this: Bring the weekly income calculation, annual overnight count, and records showing who actually pays the child's coverage and care. Complete the credit worksheet beside the obligation worksheet.
Read the relevant official instructions: Indiana Child Support Guideline 6: parenting-time credit.
These preparation notes explain one part of the state guideline. A new estimate does not change an existing order; a modification request does.
How Indiana cases actually get to a number
Build weekly adjusted income for each parent, combine, round to the schedule, and allocate. Parenting-time credit is a later Indiana-specific worksheet, not a guess.
Indiana’s Child Support Rules and Guidelines use weekly adjusted income and a published support schedule, then assign the paying parent a proportionate share. That is a different path from neighboring states that use another model, so do not import a table, percentage, or overnight credit from somewhere else.
Parenting time in Indiana
Indiana’s parenting-time credit uses the overnights in the Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines or the actual order. Credit tables are official. Informal midweek dinners do not automatically count as overnights.
Costs Indiana usually treats separately
- Health-insurance premiums
- Work-related child-care costs
- Extraordinary educational expenses
- Post-secondary support when the court orders it
When Indiana courts leave the guideline
The guideline is presumptive. High income, a child’s extraordinary needs, and travel costs to exercise parenting time are listed considerations. Put them in findings, not in weekly income.
