How Michigan child support law works
The 2025 Michigan Child Support Formula took effect January 1, 2025. The manual and its current supplement work together: the manual defines the calculation, while the supplement supplies economic figures. Under MCL 552.605, a departure requires the appropriate findings.

How the guideline is calculated
- Determine each parent’s formula net income. It can differ from take-home pay because only the manual’s deductions and adjustments apply.
- Use the general-care support tables and low-income provisions to establish base obligations.
- Apply the parental-time offset using the children’s overnights. This is a separate equation, not a direct percentage discount.
- Account for medical support, health premiums, child care, and any dependent-benefit credit. Review deviations separately.
Ordinary medical expenses and health-insurance premiums are different components. Counting the same cost in both places can distort an estimate.

Documents that make the worksheet more useful
- Income and tax information for both parents, including business records where needed.
- Birth dates and an overnight count for each child.
- Medical and insurance costs, child-care costs, and information about dependent benefits.
Keep the source document beside each figure you enter. If a number is uncertain, note what still needs to be confirmed before relying on an estimate.
What this site’s worksheet covers
The educational guide and official resources are available now. Our Michigan workflow collects both parents’ financial information and produces a printable accounting. It does not calculate a child-support amount; the official state calculator linked on this page does.
How Michigan cases actually get to a number
The general-care formula, low-income transition, and parenting-time offset are interdependent. This site’s Michigan module follows the 2025 general-care formula and reports remaining issues (taxes, other-child adjustments, deviations) as outside scope.
Michigan uses the Michigan Child Support Formula Manual rather than a short percentage table. Ordinary medical support, child care, and a 2.5-power parenting-time offset are part of the published formula. That is a different path from neighboring states that use another model, so do not import a table, percentage, or overnight credit from somewhere else.
Parenting time in Michigan
Michigan’s parenting-time offset uses a 2.5-power curve on overnights. Small overnight changes at the high-sharing end move the number more than the same change at the low end. Count overnights the manual’s way.
Costs Michigan usually treats separately

When Michigan courts leave the guideline
Incapacity, extra dependents, and court deviations remain on the official calculator. Agreement with 48,943 of 48,980 printed schedule entries is documented here; the remaining $1 rounding boundaries still belong on the FOC tool for a filing.
Official Michigan forms to keep beside this guide
Michigan formula, supplement, parental-time offset, medical support, and child care. Published 2025 PDF general-care equations, low-income transition, parental-time offset, ordinary medical, child care and approved premium allocation are implemented. Of 48,980 independent printed schedule comparisons, 48,943 agree exactly and 37 differ by $1 at rounding boundaries. Dependent benefits, other-child adjustments, new premium eligibility determinations, incapacity and deviations require the official worksheet. The primary authority is the published Michigan source. Fill the official form from source documents. Use this page only to check that you chose the right Michigan path—primary versus shared, table versus percentage, add-ons versus basic support.
Where this is typically filed
Circuit Court family divisions and the Friend of the Court administer most cases. Bring the current manual and supplement, not only a printout from an educational site.
Questions specific to Michigan
Why isn’t Michigan a simple table?
The formula manual layers general care, medical, child care, and a nonlinear parenting offset.
Does more parenting time always cut support a lot?
The 2.5-power offset is nonlinear. Extra overnights matter more once sharing is already high.
Can I file this site’s Michigan estimate?
Use it to understand the formula, then verify a proposed filing with the official FOC/MiChildSupport calculation.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same public calculator as Michigan?
MiChildSupport offers the state’s public calculator. Its quick-start guide explains the information to gather and how to view and print results; the result is not a support order.
Does this guide also calculate alimony?
No. These steps concern child support. A worksheet may consider an existing spousal-support payment when its rules allow, but it does not determine a new alimony award.
Can I file the financial intake as the state worksheet?
Our intake is a preparation aid. Use the official state forms and the instructions for your court when submitting a proposed support calculation.
