How Mississippi child support law works
Legal starting point. Mississippi Code section 43-19-101 supplies percentage guidelines for support, while section 43-19-103 identifies factors that can support a departure. The guideline starts with the absent parent’s adjusted gross income after legally recognized deductions. Read Mississippi Code §§ 43-19-101 and 43-19-103.
How the guideline is calculated
The applicable percentage depends on the number of children. Income below or above the statutory range calls for a written reasonableness finding, and medical support or a deviation must be evaluated separately from the basic percentage calculation.
What this site’s worksheet covers
Uses the absent parent’s adjusted gross income after legally mandated deductions and other support adjustments. If annual adjusted gross income is below $10,000 or above $100,000, the court must make a written reasonableness finding. Medical support and possible deviation criteria are separate from the base percentage.
Documents that make the worksheet more useful
Mississippi adjusted-gross-income computation and financial declaration. Gather the records that support the income, parenting-time, insurance, child-care, and other adjustment entries that apply to the family. The calculator applies the guideline formula described above and identifies any listed worksheet line it does not compute.
For a filing or agreement, complete the official court forms linked on this page. They use the same guideline structure explained here, and the court applies it to the facts of the case.
Before you enter your numbers
Does Mississippi use both salaries in a combined-income table?
The ordinary Mississippi guideline applies a child-count percentage to the paying parent's adjusted gross income. The statutory deductions and child count therefore matter before the percentage is applied. The court must also address the statute's income-range findings and any justified departure from the guideline.
Prepare this: Prepare the paying parent's income and allowed deductions, list every child covered by the proposed order, and identify existing support duties and medical coverage separately.
Read the relevant official instructions: Mississippi Code §§ 43-19-101 and 43-19-103.
These preparation notes explain one part of the state guideline. A new estimate does not change an existing order; a modification request does.
How Mississippi cases actually get to a number
This is not an income-shares table. The applicable percentage depends on the number of children and is applied to the noncustodial parent’s adjusted gross income after legally recognized deductions. Combined parental income is not the lookup key.
Mississippi Code section 43-19-101 sets percentage guidelines of the absent parent’s adjusted gross income. Section 43-19-103 lists factors that can support a written departure. That is a different path from neighboring states that use another model, so do not import a table, percentage, or overnight credit from somewhere else.
Parenting time in Mississippi
Mississippi’s basic percentage assumes a primary-caretaker model. True joint physical custody is a 43-19-103 / case-law problem, not a hidden percentage change. Do not cut the statutory percentage in half because overnights look even.
Costs Mississippi usually treats separately
- Medical support as ordered
- Child-care when the court includes it
- Extraordinary medical expenses
- Life-insurance to secure support when ordered
When Mississippi courts leave the guideline
Income below or above the statutory range needs a written reasonableness finding. A child’s independent resources and a parent’s other dependents are 43-19-103 topics.

Where this is typically filed
Chancery Court hears most family cases; DHS/DCSS handles IV-D. Bring proof of AGI deductions—the percentage is only as good as the income base.
Questions specific to Mississippi
Does Mississippi combine both parents’ incomes?
The statutory percentage starts from the absent parent’s adjusted gross income, not a combined table.
What percentages apply?
They rise with the number of children under § 43-19-101. Confirm the current statutory figures.
Can we agree to ignore the percentage?
Parties can present an agreement, but the court still measures it against the guideline and the 43-19-103 factors.
