How Arizona child support law works

Legal starting point. Arizona’s guidelines use an income-shares model: the law estimates what the children would receive if the parents lived together, then assigns that obligation between the parents. The published guideline and worksheet control the definitions of income and permitted adjustments. Read Arizona Child Support Guidelines §§ II–III.

How the guideline is calculated

The worksheet combines adjusted child-support income, selects the basic obligation for the number of children, and allocates it by income share. Parenting time, child care, insurance, education costs, other children, and deviations are separate worksheet steps.

What this site’s worksheet covers

Uses the Arizona Judicial Branch 2022 Arizona Child Support Guidelines, effective January 1, 2022 and revised September 21, 2022. Arizona uses the Income Shares Model; both parents’ incomes are used to calculate the support amount. The encoded Schedule of Basic Support Obligation is taken from the court-published 2022 Excel child support calculator Schedule sheet. The court workbook rounds combined adjusted income to the nearest $50 before schedule lookup. Basic support increases by 10% times the proportion of children age 12 or older. Parenting-time adjustment, medical/dental/vision insurance, child care, education expenses, other children, self-support reserve, travel expense adjustments and deviations require the full Arizona worksheet.

Documents that make the worksheet more useful

Arizona Child Support Worksheet and child support income adjustments. Gather the records that support the income, parenting-time, insurance, child-care, and other adjustment entries that apply to the family. The calculator applies the guideline formula described above and identifies any listed worksheet line it does not compute.

For a filing or agreement, complete the official court forms linked on this page. They use the same guideline structure explained here, and the court applies it to the facts of the case.

Before you enter your numbers

Does Arizona count every paycheck as a separate month?

The guidelines work with monthly child-support income, so seasonal or fluctuating earnings need a representative monthly figure. Arizona then makes guideline adjustments before using the support schedule. The child's age and the parenting-time calculation are additional steps; they cannot be inferred from salary alone.

Prepare this: Bring a full year of earnings when work is seasonal, the children's birth dates, and a calendar showing the length of parenting periods rather than only their number.

These preparation notes explain one part of the state guideline. A new estimate does not change an existing order; a modification request does.

How Arizona cases actually get to a number

The Arizona worksheet combines adjusted child-support income, selects a basic obligation for the number of children, and allocates it by income share. Parenting-time adjustments, child care, insurance, education, and support of other children are later lines—not something to bake into the first income figure.

Arizona’s statewide guidelines estimate what the children would have received in an intact household, then assign that cost between the parents using an income-shares worksheet. That is a different path from neighboring states that use another model, so do not import a table, percentage, or overnight credit from somewhere else.

Parenting time in Arizona

Arizona publishes parenting-time adjustments tied to the number of overnights. Those credits change the paying parent’s share; they do not rewrite the basic obligation table. Equal parenting time still starts from combined income, then applies the overnight adjustment the current guidelines specify.

Costs Arizona usually treats separately

  • Child-care costs consistent with the guidelines
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for the children
  • Education expenses the court includes
  • Extraordinary child costs with findings

When Arizona courts leave the guideline

The guideline amount is presumed. Courts may deviate when application would be inappropriate or unjust, including a child’s special needs, a parent’s travel to exercise parenting time, or income far outside the schedule. Write the reason; do not silently pick a different table cell.

Questions about Arizona child support

What income belongs in the Arizona child support calculator?

Use monthly adjusted child-support income as defined by the Arizona guidelines. Gross wages are a starting point; business earnings, allowable adjustments and income from other sources need the state’s treatment. A Schedule C profit or paycheck take-home total is not automatically the correct guideline figure.

Does the AZ calculator include parenting-time credits?

The Arizona module here computes the basic income-shares obligation. The full official worksheet applies parenting-time adjustments along with eligible insurance, child-care, education and other costs. Check those lines against the actual parenting schedule; entering a schedule here does not establish that every official custody adjustment is included.

Can I use a prior-year Arizona calculator for my worksheet?

Check the guideline version and effective dates in the official Arizona materials, along with the rule version shown on this site. A year in a search query does not establish which rules apply to a case. Compare the stated scope before printing an estimate or using figures in an agreement.
